Le voyage dans l'oeuvre d'Antonio Tabucchi: une pérégrination au coeur de l'intériorité et de l'écriture

Abstract

Our research aims at considering the numerous geographical, existential and temporal journeys described within Antonio Tabucchi’s corpus as an inner exploration meant to overcome the torments of a complex interiority. Most of the writer’s works are an expression of a dilemma between an undeniable need of stability and an urgent desire for new horizons. Tabucchi and his characters are at the very heart of a never-ending movement stemming from their peculiar state of mind and sensitivity. When the author discovered Pessoa and Portugal, he also became aware of the meaning of saudade. Saudade hosts the greatest part of the writer’s inner world. Such a feeling of dissatisfaction inspires many departures as well as the need of different atmospheres, but even though Tabucchi and his characters are often far from their native land, they always look for the reassuring walls and comforting roofs of their home in order to find some clues in their identity-strengthening process. In Antonio Tabucchi’s world, anguished characters tend to associate diversity and otherness with a sense of familiarity. Travelers do hope to find a component of their own personality by visiting foreign countries and by acquiring a deeper knowledge of their culture. They are often inspired by a set of scholarly quotations and readings in order to quench their thirst for more certainty and stability within the unstable environment of their fragmented identity. Geographical, existential and temporal journeys play a key role in the process of inner growth which leads to writing.

Notre étude se propose de considérer les nombreux voyages géographiques, existentiels et temporels décrits dans le corpus d’Antonio Tabucchi comme une exploration intérieure destinée à surmonter les tourments d’une personnalité complexe. La plupart des œuvres de l’écrivain expriment un dilemme entre un incontestable besoin de stabilité et un désir irrépressible de connaître de nouveaux horizons. Tabucchi et ses personnages sont en proie à un mouvement incessant enfanté par leur propre état d’esprit et leur sensibilité. La découverte de Pessoa et du Portugal a aussi permis à l’auteur d’apprendre la signification de la notion de saudade. La plus grande partie de l’univers de l’écrivain trouve refuge dans la saudade. Ce sentiment d’insatisfaction appelle à nombre de departs du lieu de residence permanent et suscite une appétence pour des atmospheres autres. Mais même si Tabucchi et ses personnages séjournent souvent loin de leur terre natale, ils s’attachent à rechercher la protection de murs rassurants et de toits réconfortants suceptibles de contribuer à l’affermissement de leur identité. Dans le monde d’Antonio Tabucchi, des individus inquiets tendent à assimiler la difference et l’altérité à une sensation de familiarité. Les voyageurs tabucchiens espèrent retrouver une part de leur personnalité à l’occasion de pérégrinations dans des pays étrangers leur dispensant un savoir approfondi sur leur culture. Leur cheminement s’effectue fréquemment à travers une foule de citations érudites et de lectures répondant à leur désir de plus grandes certitudes et de stabilité au sein d’un environnement instable à l’image de leur éclatement identitaire. Les voyages géographiques, existentiels et temporels sont indispensables à une entreprise de croissance intérieure aboutissant à la naissance de l’écriture.
