Le radici politiche del nazionalismo greco nel XX secolo. Dal regime di Ioannis Metaxas (1936-40) al regime dei colonnelli (1967-74)

Abstract


Durante il XX secolo la Grecia ha vissuto alcuni momenti cruciali, due dei quali sono la dittatura di Ioannis Metaxas (1936-40) e la dittatura dei colonnelli (1967-74) oltre alla Guerra Civile (1946-49) e alla catastrofe in Asia Minore (1918-22). Metaxas ha cercato di articolare un discorso sulla nazione inserendolo in un contesto di lunghissimo periodo risalente alla Grecia classica. I colonnelli hanno dimostrato tutta la loro profonda arretratezza culturale e il loro fanatismo ideologico attraverso un abbozzo di discorso nazionale sempre inconsistente, farneticante e a tratti ridicolo. Nel secolo scorso il discorso sulla nazione in Grecia rimane sul piano politico legato sostanzialmente alla sua definizione ottocentesca esportata dall'Europa occidentale e assume raramente caratteri originali e autonomamente elaborati.

 

In the XX century Greece lived some of the most important moments of is history, including Ioannis Metaxas’s dictatorship (1936-40), the colonels’ dictatorship (1967-74), the Civil War (1946-49) and the catastrophe in Asia Minor (1918-22). Metaxas tried to articulate a discourse on nation by referring to a long-term context dating back to classical Greece. The colonels demonstrated all their profound cultural backwardness and ideological fanaticism in a sketch of national discourse that proved always weak, raving and at times even ludicrous. In Greece, in the past century,  the discourse on nation remained fundamentally related, from the political point of view, to its XIX century definition exported from Western Europe, and it seldom acquired original and autonomously elaborated traits.
