«Come Prometheo nel Caucaso legato»: Campanella e il caso delle traduzioni latine dell’ “Atheismus triumphatus”
Abstract
This essay examines the complex history of the composition and translation of Campanella’s Atheismus triumphatus. Originally conceived in the vernacular during the author’s years of imprisonment, it was subsequently reworked in Latin for the two Roman printings of 1630–1631 and the Paris edition of 1636. An analysis of the textual variants, from the autograph (Barb. lat. 4458) to the later Latin revisions, reveals a workshop of rewriting. Here, deletions, interpolations, and reformulations expose the tension between the subversive radicalism of the original design and the reductio ad religionem enforced by ecclesiastical censorship.
